Review – Breanna by Karen Nichols

BreannaGenre: Paranormal Romance

Breanna Cooper had a quiet kind of life. Her parents had loved her and pampered her; she worked hard to make her coffee and tea shop a success in the small tourist town of Newport on the coast of Washington. When she went to open the shop that one morning, everything turned upside down. One minute she was standing before the ornate door in early May and the next she was lying in front of a fireplace with a pair of men staring down at her.

A blonde and a brunette. She closed her eyes, wondering if she were dreaming but when the tawny lashes opened, they were still there, sexy as ever.

Then the sharp pain in her head made itself known. And she panicked.

Thoughts
I’m trying to read all of the books I have bought and downloaded for free. In my list of books, I found this one and had to jump on it. I was in the mood for werewolves and magic. I’m really glad I did as I enjoyed this read. There were some editing issues, but nothing near as bad as I’ve seen. Most were just typos that could be corrected with a proofreader. The storyline more than made up for it to me.

As I was reading the reviews on Amazon before reading the book, I got nervous, wondering if I would be able to finish it. I had no problem. I didn’t get confused and the book wasn’t hard to understand as some of the reviews state. The story had intrigue and two hot Alpha males who found their mate and wouldn’t let anything bad happen to her. The King of Demons, Prince of Demons, Queen of the Fae and Princess of the Fae were all involved in this story. There was a lot going on, but I think the author pulled it together very well. She developed the characters so you understood their actions.

Review – The Forever Kind by Kaitlin Ashbury

The Forever KindGenre: Contemporary Romance
Series: The Bramble Gap Series, Book 1
Won my copy in the Marketing for Romance Writers Blog Hop

Blurb
Beth has always played it safe.
Growing up in the midst of scandal and rumor taught Beth O’Neal the appeal of fading into the background. Now all of Bramble Gap, AZ thinks she’s pregnant, and Beth is thrust into a spotlight she never wanted.

But safe never got her anywhere.
Gabriel Lombardi is all Beth has wanted since she was eight years old, but he never saw her as anything but his sister’s best friend. Now she finally has his attention, and even Beth is shocked at the passion they discover.

Can she be sure that theirs is the forever kind?

Thoughts
This book had me laughing and crying. I loved Beth and Gabe (even if I wanted to punch him a few times). As I’ve said numerous times, I love the brother’s best friend or best friend’s brother tropes. The Forever Kind was a unique addition to that because Beth was basically raised as one of the family. The fact that they were extremely close friends as well, was different.

Kaitlin Ashbury is a new author and if this is how all of her work turns out, she is going to do very well. She built the characters (secondary included) to feel like they were your family. You knew them intimately. She set the pace of the novel from the beginning and never faltered. This novel was beautiful and just about perfect. She added just enough drama and waited until the perfect time for everything.

I love novels centered on small towns, as I am from one. This depicted how they are to a tee. The nosy neighbors reminded me so much of the parents of my friends in high school. I could relate to this story so well. I’m still smiling from the book as I write this review. The Forever Kind is a happy novel, that will bring a smile to your face and laughter to your life.

Review – Hedging His Bets by Celia Kyle and Mina Carter

Hedging His BetsGenre: Paranormal Romance
Purchased from Amazon on April 10, 2013

Blurb
Honey loves running her bar and grill, catering to humans and shifters alike. But there are two things that dim her love of the place: cocky assholes who think they own the world, and cocky assholes who think they can flex their muscles and wreck her bar when throwing a temper tantrum. Unfortunately, the drop-dead gorgeous, hotter than hot, shifter man she secretly loves is both.

Blake wants the curvaceous, gorgeous Honey in his bed. Now. He’s lusted (but not loved, let’s get that straight) after the luscious woman for months. True, he looks like a bad-boy biker mixed with a player and, yeah, he’s broken a few things in her bar… But only because the guys were hitting on his girl. With no hope of winning her over in sight, he does what any red-blooded werehedgehog would do in his position. He lies.

Thoughts
This was a fun shifter romance story. I mean how can you not laugh at a story that has this big, sexy all Alpha male that transforms into a little, cute hedgehog. This was a very enjoyable escape from the mundane real life. I will definitely read more from these two authors.

Review – Wolf Protector (Federal Paranormal Unit, Book 1) by Milly Taiden

Wolf ProtectorBlurb
A woman with a secret…
The Federal Paranormal Unit is an elite squad of supernaturals dedicated to solving missing persons cases. Erica’s gift allows her a special connection with the crime, but it comes at a deep personal cost… Until now, she’s kept her gift a secret, even from the other members of the team. But this case will throw her together with Agent Trent Buchanan. He’s the object of her secret desires, but he’s also a cocky womanizer. She’d rather swim in shark-infested waters with a paper cut than admit she has feelings for him.

A man with one desire…
Wolf Shifter Trent wants Erica more than he’s ever wanted any woman. He’s spent years patiently waiting for her to admit that she wants him too. Working one-on-one in a race to find a serial killer, Trent’s patience and Erica’s resolve wear thin. When Trent discovers the truth about Erica, will he accept her for who she is? And can he protect her from the horrors that her gift brings?

A case that pushes them to the edge…
Erica will have to risk it all if she wants to stop the killer, and when she does, Trent may have to put his own life on the line to make sure his mate is protected…

Thoughts
Okay, so werewolves are my all-time favorite Alpha males. I mean, can you get anymore Alpha than that? I first read Milly Taiden when her first novel Sharp Change came out and I love her. She infuses a sense of humor along with the sizzling chemistry. She fast became one of my favorite authors, I now buy everything she writes.

Erica has had it really rough. No one ever wanted her; even her mother abandoned her when she was four because of her gift. Since then, she trusts no one with the knowledge of her gift. She knows as soon as they find out, they’ll leave or try to put her back in the crazy house.

Trent knew the first time he met Erica that she was his mate. He was biding his time trying to get her to warm up to him. His playboy ways did nothing to persuade her though.

I love that Trent was always there for Erica and seemed to know exactly what she needed, even when she didn’t. She would look for him when she needed him and not even realize it. This was an amazing story that drew me in and made me bite my nails while they tried to figure out who the serial killer was.

Wolf Protector is an amazing beginning to a new series that has a lot of potential. I know I will be buying every book!

Review – The Tycoon’s Convenient Wife by Ros Clarke

The Tycoon's Convenient WifeGenre: Contemporary Romance
Purchased from Amazon on April 19, 2013 for FREE

Blurb
Fifteen years ago, Emily Standish and Guy Munro were friends. Until she fell in love with him and he married someone else. Now Guy needs an enormous favour from his old friend and Emily has a chance to see if love can strike twice.

Thoughts
I really love the marriage of convenience stories turning into more, I was excited about this one because they had been friends for so long. In the end, the book wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. Emily let everyone basically run over her. To me she felt no self worth. I know this is just my opinion (hence my review), but I like my heroines tough, sassy and bad ass. I didn’t get that at all with Emily.

Guy was just an ass. First, how the hell can you give up your best friend for someone? If my significant other is making demands like that before the wedding, hello red flags anyone? I just don’t see the story happening as it did and couldn’t really get into the story at all

Review – Texas Secrets by Jean Brashear

Texas SecretsGenre: Western Romance
Purchased from Amazon on April 16, 2013 for FREE
Series: The Gallaghers, Book 1 (Texas Heroes)

Blurb
Up-and-coming chef Maddie Collins finds out that her father’s life was a lie when she is bequeathed a family homeplace she never knew existed—by the husband of the only woman her father ever loved. Rugged horseman Boone Gallagher arrives back in Texas to discover that the father who drove him away has struck one last blow. The only place he’s ever thought of as home now belongs to a woman who doesn’t want it, and he must keep her there for thirty days—or it will be lost to them both. (Updated, revised version of previously published A Family Secret, Silhouette Special Edition.)

Thoughts
The start of this book had me laughing and pulled at my heart strings. I love when an author grabs you from the moment you start reading. This definitely happened to me here. I couldn’t stop reading.

Boone is having issues dealing with the fact that the father he loved had once again betrayed him, leaving the ranch house to a stranger, a murderer’s daughter. Maddie found out her father’s whole life had been a lie. With both of their lives turned upside down and both of them trying to fight an attraction unlike any they’ve ever felt, there are so many mishaps and blunders you will laugh and cry with the characters.

Boone has been bit once by the love bug with a city girl. He watched the life fade from her eyes the longer they lived in the country. He will not go through that again, so the best thing to do is to just stay away from Maddie. Maddie has places to go and jobs to get in New York, she wants no part of the ranch. Once they both give into the attraction they both realize it’s love and they both want the other to take action. When Boone breaks down to Maddie, I think he shows what being an Alpha male is all about.

Review – Stetson’s Storm by Kathleen Ball

Stetson's StormGenre: Western Romance
Purchased from Amazon on April 18, 2013
Series: The Lasso Springs Series, Book 3

Blurb
Five years ago, hunky rodeo star Stetson Scott left town, never looking back. Storm McCrory’s heart was ripped out that same day. Now Stetson is back in town. He’s shocked to find both Storm and his son living in poverty, shunned by most of the town.

Thoughts
Kathleen Ball writes cowboys very well. This is the first book I’ve read from The Lasso Springs Series and I got along fine. It can definitely be read as a stand-a-lone.

I can’t even begin to imagine the pain and betrayal Storm must’ve felt. Everyone abandoned her in her time of need, her father, the man she loves and the whole town. The only job she’s able to find is the midnight shift at the local diner and even there she is constantly barraged with insults. She just holds her head up, does her job and gets back to her son.

Stetson left five years ago when his father gave him an ultimatum. He only came back when his sister called for help. He left his heart when he left before, and he doesn’t really care to get it back. He doesn’t have the time for a relationship, but when Stetson finds out everything that has been hidden from him for the past five years, well he was devastated.

Storm and Stetson are an amazing couple who work through their issues. Kathleen Ball established the characters well enough that you understood what they were feeling and thinking. You could totally understand why Storm couldn’t trust and why it was so important for Stetson to have that trust. She had you there wondering if they would ever get it together. She spun a beautiful love story with some serious mystery as well. I will definitely be reading more from Ms. Ball.
